Why Hose Sizes Are Converted From MM to Inches?

You notice that the size of hoses are mentioned in both mm and inches. The main reasons of using these unit together are:

  • Some countries like Europe and Asia use a metric system (mm) for hoses. While United States measures them in inches which is known as the imperial system. To show both units help you to understand their sizes easily.

  • It also helps you to match the size of hoses to the pipes. If they are not fit then there will be the chance of leakage. As a result, it creates problems during installation.

  • You can see that some hydraulic industries use dash sizes for them. In this system, diameter takes sixteenths of an inch. It helps you to communicate with suppliers fastly and without any mistakes.

  • With the help of this, you can compare the different sizes of hose easily. You do not need to calculate them manually. In this way, you make decisions about their buying confidently.

Definition of Hose Dimensions

Inner Diameter

Inner diameter is the space through which fluid and gases pass. You can measure it as a distance across the inside hollow space of a pipe. It is very important because it controls the fluid flow and how much liquid can pass through it.

If you want to fit the hose over a pipe or tube you have to calculate its inner diameter (ID). To calculate its diameter, you must know the outer diameter. Then minus wall thickness on both sides. As a result, you will get its inner diameter.

Outer Diameter

You can understand it as the straight line measurement across the outside edges of a round object such as hoses, pipes and tubes and pass directly to their centers. It is usually calculated in mm and inches.

As it measures the outer diameter, you can use it to select the size of valves, clamps and joints to seal them onto pipes. You notice that the outer diameter (OD) remains same for different pipes. So that they can easily match with each other.

Wall Thickness

It is the distance between inner and outer edges of the hose. Wall thickness is measured in millimeters (mm). It varies from 0.5 mm to 6 mm depending on the material layers, applications and pressure needed.

It is helpful in high working pressures. It maintains the shape of hoses and can withstand them against high temperature and pressure. Thicker walls give more strength to the hoses. That's why they are not affected by abrasions and resist deformation.

Silicone Hose Sizes and Their Dimensions

As we discuss above, silicone hoses have different sizes. If you want to buy them you need to check their inner diameter, outer diameter, wall thickness and your needs. So, we describe a short table about it for your facility.

How to Measure Silicone Hose Inner Diameter?

If you want to calculate the inner diameter of a silicone hose you can use various tools for it. These equipment will give you an accurate size. But you have to operate them in the right way.

Use Calipers: To measure the inner diameter of hoses by digital or vernier calipers, you have to insert it in the silicone hose opening. Then expand the jaws until they touch with both inner sides. Note the reading which is its inner diameter.

Ruler or Steel Rule: You have to lay the hose on a table without any squeeze. Measure its diameter to place the ruler across its center. You must note the reading from one edge to another. Do not record the outer diameter with it.

Measure the Spigot/Pipe: If your hose is old and warped and you can not measure the exact inner diameter from it. You have to determine the size of your pipe over which you will fit the hose. Because it is the same as the inner diameter.

Record in Millimeters: You can record your hose diameter in millimeters. It is a standard unit for it and has the highest accuracy. If your silicone hose is oval you must check it at multiple spots for better measurement.

FAQs

How to convert diameter mm to inches?

If you want to convert diameter to inches, divide the millimetre value by 25.4. For instance, a 50 mm diameter divided by 25.4 which equals 1.97 inches. You can also use an online tool for this calculation.

What is the most common silicone hose size?

The most common size of silicone hose is 3 mm (1/8") which is used for vacuum lines. But for large turbo, it has 76mm (3") size. You must measure the internal diameter (ID) of silicone hoses for accurate size.

What is 20 mm diameter in inches?

The 20 mm diameter is equal to 0.787 inches. You can also write it as 3/4 inch. Both have the same meaning.

Can I replace a metric hose with an inch-sized hose?

Yes, you can replace it with an inch size hose. But there should be inside diameter, pressure rating and end fitting same. If they will not match then there is a chance of leakage.
